The Opportunity of Adolescence: A Change All Parents Can Learn to Embrace

This workshop focuses on the opportunity that adolescence presents as the family is undergoing tremendous developmental change. The calm years of a family with latency age children can be dramatically disrupted by the hormonal surges of adolescence, subsequent mood swings and desire for separation from the family. But in understanding the changing brain of adolescents and what is “normal”, parents can find great opportunity in building lasting relationships with their teens and opening up to the positive creativity, excitement and passion that teens can bring to family dynamics.
This workshop can also be formatted for clinicians. As clinicians, we can play a critical role in showing parents this opportunity. We can help them move from a place of conflict, frustration and hopelessness with their teen to one filled with understanding, compassion and joy. Families with teens will all have some level of conflict as parents go through the healthy process of launching their adolescent into adulthood. Having the clinical tools to guide the family through this journey is essential.
